How to fix brown spots on your lawn

The effects of dog urine on your lawn are similar to that of nitrogen-rich liquid fertiliser. A small amount of fertiliser makes your yard healthy, but too much will kill your lawn. The most severe cases of dog urine lawn damage result in brown spots, which are areas of dead and dying grass. Lawns that are overly dry or already weak and stressed are especially susceptible to this type of dog urine damage.

If your dog is a female and raw fed the ammonia levels in her urine will almost always burn your lawn so you may be best to look into spot training.

How to fix brown lawn spots:

  1. Rake the patchy areas to remove as much of the dead grass as possible.

  2. Cover the patches with a quality topsoil or lawn soil until it is level.

  3. Scatter lawn seed on top of the topsoil. Choose a seed suited to your climate, grass type, and sunlight exposure.

  4. Water your lawn daily

After a period of time, you will see the grass start growing. If there are still patches visible, throw in more seed and water regularly. Allow new growth to get at least one-third taller than recommended mowing height before you mow, or seedling growth could be interrupted.

  • Spray areas where your dog urinates with water.

  • Pouring water on the area after your dog urinates will help to dilute the urine and lessen the effects of the nitrogen on your lawn.

  • Ask your local pet shop about water rocks

A natural way to repair yellow spots in the grass caused by the dog’s urine is to dissolve a cup of baking soda in a bucket of water and pour on the affected area. The baking soda neutralises the high nitrogen concentration, and it will also deodorise the area so the dog won’t recognise the spot and go there again.
