5 easy tips to get a lush lawn

Have you ever walked past a house and admired their lawn? Usually, it costs thousands paying for a landscaper to renovate your lawn and keep it maintained. We are all about DIY and landscaping is no exception. If you’ve seen our Garden highlights on our Instagram, you’ll know that we are huge lovers of our lawn.

Here are some tips to having a lawn that turns heads, it takes a bit of TLC but with some perseverance, you’ll have the best lawn on the street come summer!

Aerate

There are many reasons your lawn could need to be aerated; heavy foot traffic that compacts the soil, old lawns that are thick with weeds and clay soils.

If you have the type of soil and conditions that require lawn aeration, you can do it once-twice a year. Aeration allows the roots to breathe and creates airflow and spaces for nutrients and water to reach the roots. We recommend this aerator from bunnings.

Scarify

A lawn scarifier sometimes referred to as a ‘dethatcher’, is a garden tool that is designed to cut through the soil, helping to remove dead moss and other debris like dead grass and weeds. You can hire a tool for this or use a metal rake that helps to aerate the soil, making it healthier, (almost) weed-free and longer-lasting and so much easier on the eye!

Top Dress

Topdressing is a mix that you can buy from a landscaping supply or in bag form like this.

Topdressing materials are evenly applied in a thin layer, over the grass so the grass sticks out over the top of it. It can reduce thatch buildup by encouraging decomposition. When applied following aeration, the topdressing material filters into the holes opened by the aeration process, speeding turfgrass recovery.

Over Seed

Overseeding newer turfgrass varieties into an older lawn can help it better withstand insects, disease, drought, shady conditions and heavy traffic. Most importantly, a renovated lawn stays greener and looks thicker and healthier! After you’ve aerated and top dressed, the over seeding process is easy by just scattering your seed across the lawn and givig it a light water daily.

Maintain

Maintenance is key to a thriving lawn. Through the warmer months you should water every second day where possible in the evening to avoid it drying out and burning it in the light. You should also invest in a good fertiliser or lawn feed. Weed and Feed is always a good choice as it keep the weeds away.

Mowing your lawn correctly also helps the grass stay healthy and not turn into thatch. In warmer months mow 1/3 of the blade at once so moisture is retained for the roots.
